Gangā, descending from the heavens, ‘fell’ on to the head of Śiva; this is deemed to be a slide in her position. Thence, she went on to ‘fall’ on the Himālayas.  Himālayas form the higher reaches of the earth; from the higher ranges of the Himālayas, flowing as multiple streams, Gangā descended to the earth, fell lower and continuing her flow, merged into the ocean … Much the same is the degradation in the lives of fools, says Bhartruhari.

Our Acharyaru has opined that Bhartruhari’s comparison of the slide in the lives of fools to the descending of Ganga, is not very convincing … Poetically too, this symbolism is not harmonious …

Gangā is called स्वर्गंगा (svargaṅgā). From the abode of gods, Gangā descended to the earth i.e. it fell onto the crown of Śiva. ‘To descend,’ implies fall into a bad place. How can anyone construe the landing of Gangā from the heavens onto the head of Śiva as ‘descending,’ then? The legendary Kannada poet Dr. Da Rā Bendre, has however explained this process insightfully … He has said, ‘This does not amount to the slide of Gangā, but her incarnation … She came over from the heavens for our redemption’ … This view of Bendre transforms it to an ‘incarnation of Gangā.’

Gangā’s movement from the heavens to earth, leads to its slide from a higher position to a lower one, those who are profligate, slide to degradation in living, and they would never be able to regain positions of eminence, is the message of Bhartruhari here.

Our Acharyaru has pointed out that it would augur well to disregard the metaphor of Ganga but sift the message of degradation that Bhratruhari gives us here.
There is no question of attaching ‘prudence’ to the waters of Gangā … water is an inert substance and it’s natural tendency is to flow from higher to lower levels …
Gangā descended to the earth with a purpose … to redeem Bhagīrata, the childless ruler of Ayodhya, from the sins of his forefathers. Gangā’s action also brought salvation to the 60,000 sons of Sagara.

Gangā, in the modern day, is no longer pristine … We continue to dump all kinds of waste into her flowing waters and have made it unfit for the purifying ritual of  ‘Gangā snāna.’ Vedavyāsaru had stated in the Dvāpara era itself, that 5000 years post the Dvāpara era, ‘Gangā would cease to exist on the earth … she will return to the heavens.’ Our Acharyaru has reflected that these words seem to be ringing true now …

****
There are some fools in this society are deluded that they are people with merit while their own lives are actually worse than that of dogs.  Bhartruhari covers the lives of such people in this shloka…
This is illustrated through the example of a dog …
There is a dog that sits, chewing on a bone… It gnaws on a very old, dry, infested bone which does not have even a sliver of flesh sticking to it … The dog, unmindful of the ‘विगंधि – vigandhi’ i.e. overpowering stench, continues to chew on it, drenching the bone in its saliva…
(Pujya Acharyaru has pointed out that Bhartruhari’s use of ‘विगंधि – vigandhi’ here, is incorrect, grammatically.  Only something that has ‘गंध – gandha’ or fragrance that can become ‘गंधि – gandhi.’ Only four variants of the word ‘गंध – gandha’ are possible using the prefixes ‘उत्, पूति, सु, सुरभि - ut, pūti, su, surabhi’ these are उत्गंधि, पूतिगंधि, सुगंधि, सुरभिगंधि - utgandhi, pūtigandhi, sugandhi, surabhigandhi…’ Those well versed in grammar, do not forget this. Bhartruhari was the author of a great work on grammar वाक्यपदीय-Vākyapadīya’ …. Despite this apparently, the use of विगंधि – vigandhi’ seems to be inappropriate; Pujya Acharaya opines that the more apt word here would have beenविगंधं – vigandham’).
A malodourous bone which would be odious at mere sight … it might be the bone of a खरास्थिः – kharstih’ i.e. a donkey’s bone or an old remnant of some crude animal that the dog chewed as a tasty and juicy repast.
The dog focused so much on the bone, that even had the King of demi-gods, namely Lord Indra stood by, next to it, it would have been oblivious of his presence and continued to chew, shamelessly and without an iota of doubt… That is part of the dog’s foolishness … There are many humans too in the same category, observes, Bhartruhari.
Mean-minded people cling to insignificant things and relish them, considering them to be very highly interesting, in great taste and very important. This is the fate of those small minded people who flaunt it as civilized behavior.
Civilisation, says Dr Alexis Carrel, is the school for all our foolishness. He also says, “Earlier people used to eat hand-pounded, unpolished rice. Today, people eat polished rice that has lost all its nutrient content. The residual bran, after polishing the rice, is used for preparation and sale, as vitamin pills. These coloured pills are consumed by the gullible ‘civilized’ people!”
Bhartruhari has thus composed this subhaita concerning the mean minded … That is, on those who have fallen to low ways, being addicted to alcoholism, intoxicating drugs etc … this is degradation lower than dog’s life … he alerts that our lives should not fall into the same lane …

Bhartruhari had thus far in his shlokas, picturized the ways of fools. In this shloka, he brings out with a reference to his own self, how he fell prey to foolish ways.
He says, “I had commenced studying, learnt a bit and from it gained some knowledge. This imbued me with scholarly arrogance … I was deluded that there was none as learned as I. Much like a heady elephant, conceit gripped my head …”
(द्विपdvipa: An animal that uses two organs to drink viz., an elephant uses its snout and mouth to drink)
“I became egotistic, as I felt I was all-knowing and that there existed none that was as learned as I … Just the way a heady elephant runs amok disregarding everything in its line of sight, I too, with my half-baked learning and inflated ego, roamed around thinking that I was the repository of knowledge …
“Thence, I happened to hear those who were great, aware, learned, experienced and realized ones, it dawned on me that I was an ignoramus, a dunce. As goes the saying, अल्प विद्या महागर्वि - alp vidya mahaagarvi,’ all my erudition that was propped by my ego, drained out, just as fever would have descended in me …
‘When I thought I was a scholar I was unwise … Now that I know how foolish I have been, I have actually become learned,” says Bhartruhari …

Very often we gloat that what we know is tremendous; that, however is dwarfed when we associate ourselves with the truly learned ones and realization dawns on us that what remains to be learned is mountainous … This in essence is what the shloka reminds us, in a fragrant manner …

Is there any way that a fool can garner respect in the society? Bhartruhari affirms that there is a divinely ordained way, in this Shloka.
In a society populated with acclaimed scholars or in any assembly, silence marks a way out for the fool!
If the unwise are able to abide by the dictum, मौनं पंडित लक्षनं - maunaṁ paṇḍita lakṣaṇaṁ,’ they would be treading a great path laid by Lord Brahma for them to conceal their dumbness … This would be an extremely comforting way out, within their reach …
He that needlessly shoots-off his mouth or cocks his nose in the air, is not a scholarJust as is stated, ‘ पृष्ठ कस्यचित् ब्रूयात् -na prsht kasyachit brooyaat,’ a scholar is one who opens out only when many desire that he should … being balanced in speech is ornamental for scholars …
There is an incident in Rāmāyaa where Hanumanta watches on silently as the leaders of the simians air their strengths, as they contemplate how to cross the sea … Finally, when Jāmbavanta approaches and alerts him, ‘I am aware of your strengths Hanumanta; should you remain silent, the whole of the monkey species faces annihilation,’ Hanumanta relents. Not just that, he states that he would complete the task on hand and return … This, is the trait of scholars …
Maunaṁ - is not just decorative for scholars, it is specially embellishing for fools too …
It is thus that Bhartruhari stated, ‘मौनम् अपण्डितानां विभूषणं - maunam apaṇḍitānā vibhūaa,’ … more specially so, when fools keep their mouths shut in a scholarly society, it is full-fledged decoration for them …

It is however lamentable that today we see only fools making noise in the guise of freedom of speech, in the society …

There is a ‘vyāla’ i.e., a musth or rogue elephant, that cannot be controlled by a mahout … When in this condition, water drips from its forehead …

In such state even seasoned mahouts refrain from going near them … The elephant does not permit tethering, trying to chain it can prove fatal to anyone attempting it …

One who tries to counsel a fool is actually doing nothing more than trying to chain such a rogue elephant using the tender stalk of a lotus …

The attempt to reform a fool is also like the saga of those trying to polish hard diamond using the flowers of the Lebbeck tree as the flowers look abrasive!

It is also akin to infusing a drop of honey or a dash of sugar syrup to the salty waters of the sea, in order to sweeten it – the act of reforming a fool through sweet talk.

In the first place those who make such attempts are themselves fools and those who think that good counsel from a subhāita is all that is needed to reform a fool are celebrated fools themselves …

There is an idiom in Kannada for this –
ana munde kinnari bārisida hāge - Playing the fiddle in a buffalo’s presence’ … is presenting good advice to a fool …
